In 1984, Lolita Shante Gooden, a 14-year-old from Queens, was on her way to do laundry when she became a hip-hop star.
A producer stopped her and asked if she would rap over some beats from “Roxanne Roxanne,” a hit by UTFO about a girl who wouldn’t respond to a guy’s advances. She freestyled some rhymes from the perspective of the girl in the song, punching back with force and style. Her song, “Roxanne’s Revenge,” became a hit, and Lolita transformed into Roxanne Shante, one of the first female hip-hop stars.
This origin story may be accurate, but make no mistake: It’s also made for Hollywood. And yet what distinguishes “Roxanne Roxanne,” a sensitively observed new movie with a dynamite performance by Chanté Adams, is that it marries a traditional hip-hop biopic, a form long dominated by male rappers, with a more idiosyncratic and deeply felt slice of life. Matt Dike, Hit-Making Founder of Hip-Hop Label, Dies at 56
Hip-hop was a rarity on most Top 40 radio stations when the Los Angeles nightclub D.J.s Matt Dike and Mike Ross created a record label, Delicious Vinyl, in 1987. The two were steeped in hip-hop, and the success of East Coast labels like Def Jam inspired them to make records of their own.
A year later Delicious Vinyl released its first hit, Tone-Loc’s “Wild Thing,” which sold more than two million copies and reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1989. Brittany’s Record Shop to feature reggae, soul, hip-hop selections in Slavic Village
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Hip-hop, reggae and soul be the focus at Brittany’s Record Shop, a new music store located in Cleveland’s Slavic Village neighborhood.
The store is owned by local DJ and musician Brittany Benton, who performs regularly as DJ Red-I and as half of the FreshProduce hip-hop duo. Brittany’s Record Shop opens at 2 p.m. March 21.
It’s not Benton’s first foray into owning a record store. She previously ran Young Kings record store along with Samantha Flowers (aka, the other half of FreshProduce, emcee Playne Jayne).
